Hi! I am Saida, I live in New York. You all know about the hurricane that stroke America not so long ago. I am an owner of a fashion company but that day was not connected with fashion anyhow. It was all about my friends who were helping victims of the hurricane.
Welcome to my November, 6, when I came to Brooklyn to help them.
My friends were buying various stuff and were cooking food after the disaster. They brought it all to the districts that suffered more than others, such as Rockaways.
People from there suffered really much, many of them lost their houses, some even lost their lives. Those who survived didn’t have gas, electricity and heating for a week. The situation was especially hard for the disabled and old people who could not come down from the upper storeys for help. In the poor districts they live in 25-storey houses.
These were those people our guys decided to help to.
My day began at 10. I walked with my dog and rushed to Serena Bakery to take some bread for the victims of Sandy. They had already helped us this week by giving twenty boxes of tasty bread.
Our cars were full of various stuff. We could find out that many generous and kind people were living next to us.
I got fifteen packs with bread, pies, rolls etc. from the bakery. They offered to come again the next day if necessary. Me and my friend are going to the city center.
Gas stations are full of cars, policemen try to control the situation.
This post is actually not about me, so I will show my nose only
Empty roads look strangely.
It takes from two to four hours to get some patrol. Those queues are really long.
Our guys meet here every day.
It’s time to unload the car.
This is Katya, she is unpacking sweets, cans, water.
They are cooking soup in the kitchen.
They are all busy and I keep photographing! It’s time to help them.
When the soup is ready we make these portions hastily in order it does not cool down.
These are the guards of the soup!
The volunteers are hungry too!
We always need boxes so we don’t throw them away.
Everything is loaded, we discuss details and start off!
More cars need fuel.
Rockaways is a sad picture, these were someone’s houses.
Here people started to clean the stuff away.
It looks like the end of the world which is so often shown in movies about NY. It’s a strange feeling.
But some districts have it all under control already.
National Guards are coming to help.
November, 6 – one week has passed since the hurricane.
The first centres of assistance are for those who can come and get it.
But we are coming to projects – the poorest districts where dysfunctional families live. An apartment costs here $200-$300 a month while for the same apartment on Manhatten you will pay five-six times more.
This is the local gas station.
The locals have brought water.
We have only two hours before darkness, this place is not safe so we are in a hurry.
I leave my cam in the car and help the guys to carry the boxes to people’s apartments. Next two hours we carry the food and other stuff to those who need them. Not everyone opens doors, but someone does and even starts helping too. Locals tell us where the disabled live and who needs help most. People are grateful and surprised. This is what makes us wake up at 7 in the morning and do it again and again.
It is getting dark and strange indivuduals start appearing in the street. One of them requires a blanket and we don’t give him but the guy is seeking for a conflict. We hastily pack our stuff and go back to the centre.
On the way we fuel the car of one woman he needs help.
We are back – so tired but satisfied with the results. Tomorrow we gonna do the same despite the snow promised by the weather forecast.
I come home, walk with my dog, download the photos and go to sleep.
But my place is already occupied!
